BACKGROUND: Joseph @ the JJBA wiki

PERSONALITY: If Joseph Joestar could be defined in one word, "mischievous" probably wouldn't even cover it. One of the most notable things about Joseph when he was a young man was his hot-temperedness and impetuousness. He was almost as equally stubborn, as well as a prankster. But despite this, Joseph was (and still is) extremely savvy. He tricks his opponents through bluffs and uses information against people, all with an almost magician-like showmanship. For example, when fighting Cars (one of main antagonists) Joseph decided to destroy his only weapon. He then gave Cars a speech about how it would force him to come up with a new way to defeat him. In reality, Joseph’s bravado was actually a distraction so he could save his Hamon master while Cars wasn't looking. He also relies heavily on bluffing, regardless of whether he is talking his way out of a bad situation or creating a distraction.

Joseph also cares deeply for family and friends and, though he doesn't always show it because of his attitude,, he will go out of his way to protect them. Though he has casually picked fights with policeman and the mafia, for example, Joseph dotes on his grandmother and is more than a little afraid of her wrath. Though he was unfocused and frequently fooled around, Joseph eventually matured into a competent hero. But he will fight for what he believes is right. After being given Hamon (a fighting style that channels the energy of the sun) training, he also grows to respect enemies who show honor in battle. This is especially shown by how Joseph treats another one of the main antagonists, Wham, after defeating him. Though Wham killed his friend Caesar, Joseph attempts to give him a painless death - knowing that Wham honored Caesar in another way after their fight. Respectively, Joseph detests anyone who fights treacherously and breaks their word.

50 years later into the Stardust Crusaders arc, Joseph hasn’t changed much. Now a father and grandfather, he is an energetic (and ornery) old man. Though not without the same temper and mischievousness, Joseph has significantly matured. As the pseudo-leader of the main group of characters, he often gives orders and advice. At the same time he's also known to completely BS his own knowledge of things. Such as declaring that he knows how to ride camels because he saw Lawrence of Arabia (and slept through half of it). He still cares about his family, and can be very protective as well as affectionate, especially toward his only daughter, Holly. He is also fatherly and gentle when it comes to children in general.

His tendency to complain is even more apparent in his older years. For example, after his daughter married a Japanese man (leading to Joseph declaring that he would "never forgive the Japanese") he frequently complains about Japanese traditions. The few times he gets emotional, though, Joseph lashes out. Upon discovering that Holly was dying, he slammed his teenage grandson Jotaro against the wall and screamed. It's shown that he does this out of shock and distress, as his voice cracks when he explains to Jotaro what happened.

Another notable thing about Joseph's personality is his impulsiveness. It's unapologetic and tends to go hand in hand with his temper. The few times he does regret what he's done, though, he tries to make up for it in his own way. A few years before Stardust Crusaders begins he had an affair with a Japanese woman, resulting in a son that he wouldn't know about until much later. The reason why he did this is never explained, much less what happens between him in his wife. But after discovering that he had a son named Josuke, he puts him in his will. Later, he comes to Josuke's hometown both to help solve a situation happening in his town and try to form a relationship with his son.

Overall, Joseph is a hotheaded old man but a good person. As the "dad" of the group he leads, he's willing to stand up for and take care of people. He might prank you just as well. But he's someone you want on your team regardless.

ABILITIES:
Joseph is a adept fighter that combines a variety of techniques for his own personal style. He often combines his abilities to attack in complex and creative ways. He also uses stage magic-like techniques to confuse enemies and create distractions. His main powers, however, are his Hamon and his Stand.

Hamon
Also known as the Ripple. A type of martial arts based on drawing energy from the sun through a controlled breathing method. This is one of the few (if only) techniques that can defeat JoJo's Bizarre Adventure's version of vampires. Joseph inherited his own Hamon through his mother and grandfather. He wasn't properly trained in its use until he was 18, but it made him a proficient and dangerous fighter. Hamon is an incredibly flexible fighting style. Users can charge Hamon through their fists or objects to send powerful solar energy in their opponent, which is why many use weapons based on their preferred style. Hamon charged through inanimate objects on their own can also be dangerous. For example, Joseph once used it to pop the cap of a cola bottle to turn it into a high speed projectile. In addition to being a weapon Hamon can also give other benefits. Users can reject poison and other harmful substances by literally ejecting it out of their bloodstream through energy. It can also slow the aging process. Joseph, for example, is 67 years old but appears to be more in his mid-fifties.

Though it is powerful and versatile nature, however, Hamon has its weaknesses. Hamon users are required to constantly breathe. If breathing is stopped, slowed, or uncontrolled, their ability to channel their power is greatly diminished. Vampires typically exploit this weakness. This is why users must carefully guard themselves.

Stand: Hermit Purple
Stands are a supernatural ability that allows a person to summon a ghostly presence that stands (hence the name) beside them, giving them special powers. The ability and form of the Stand varies depending on the person that it is bound to. The physical appearance of the Stand itself is manifested by energy. It can only be seen by other Stand users and is a part of the user itself. If the Stand is injured, the damage is also reflected on its user. If the Stand receives a cut on its arm, for example, the user will also be cut.

Most Stands take on a humanoid appearance. However, Joseph's Stand "Hermit Purple" manifests as thorny purple vines from his hands. Hermit Purple can be used as whip or a grappling hook, which works doubly as a weapon, a means of escape, or a way of grabbing/carrying someone else. It also has several psychic abilities. For instance, it can produce a psychic photograph when Joseph destroys a camera. The photograph itself can be of anyone Joseph wants to see, and takes a picture of them in that same exact moment of time. It can also create live psychic videos if Joseph "hooks" himself up to any television. The television can show anyone Joseph wants to see as well, but Hermit Purple can also change channels to create audible messages of what he wants to know. People that Joseph takes psychic pictures or videos of may feel a sense of being watched. Additionally, it can create maps out of variation materials - such as sand - and can track people in real time.

Joseph often combines Hermit Purple with Hamon by charging the vines. He used this to keep Dio (a vampire and main antagonist) from touching him by "hiding" Hamon-charged vines under his shirt. Unfortunately, Hermit Purple is physically weak, and could be considered one of the weakest stands between the Stardust Crusaders protagonists.

APPEARANCE: hot pix here
INVENTORY: Hat, wallet, prosthetic metal hand even though it's attached to him anyway

CONTRACT ARRANGEMENT: Joseph would sign the contract because he is approached by someone from the Speedwagon Foundation (an institution made by his family friend, which has a Supernatural Research Department), who tells him that suspiciously supernatural abilities in this city are causing trouble and that in might be a Stand. As part of SPW's Supernatural Research Department, it should be looked into. Joseph considers the presence of a contract strange and suspicious to begin with, but SPW explains to him that people can't get in without it. He'll need to adhere to the rules of the city in order to carry out a proper investigation. Joseph decides to sign the contract. Whatever it is they think is going on in the city, Joseph plans to learn about what's going on.

ALIGNMENT: Joseph would be best aligned with GPD because, though he's not a police officer by any means, he's a very justice-oriented character (being a former shonen hero protagonist with a shonen hero grandson and all) who wants to do the right thing and protect people. But, like his work with the Speedwagon Foundation, he also works best investigating problems outside formal law. He's between a vigilante and a cooperator, taking things into his own hands a lot but also communicating with the proper authorities if he thinks they should know. And in Ginosa especially, he would recognize how much more important communication would be. He'd also believe that he could investigate corruption within the police department better on the outside.

His powers and abilities also allow him to hone in on what's going on and either report it to the police or investigate it himself!

ROLE: Private investigator, enforcer, spy. I'd be uncomfortable with entertainment and I'm not personally into law or medical!
