Alternate title: Three Men and a Baby

Holy hell of a morning.

After Coach had gotten shot, the motherfucking mountain man, the one the other called Marshall, didn't waste time. The other woman quickly introduced herself as Jean, a nurse and Marshall's wife, and had barely started trying to stop Coach's bleeding when Marshall brought up the bunker. It was less of a reccomendation and more like a demand. With Coach bleeding as bad as he was coupled with Rochelle's condition, which he would bring up later, the faster they got out the better.

And it was just in time, because as soon as the four of them got out of the hospital and made their quick introductions. Well, introductions coupled with arguing, especially when it was brought up who had shot Coach. Jean was about to shut them up with the roar of a horde did it for her. It didn't take more than a second for them to decide what to do. They abandoned the van (temporarily, they hoped), carried Coach and Rochelle into Marshall and Jean's pickup truck, piled in, and drove the fuck out.

Coach managed to stay conscious, even with all the blood he was losing. Rochelle, though, was out hot (pun intended) in her feverish condition. Jean did her best with the both of them. She said there was a doctor at the bunker, a co-worker she escaped with before she found Marshall again, who could give them a lot better help. Otherwise, between driving and trying to stablize the others, Jean and Marshall didn't have much focus to explain themselves and the bunker. As soon as they were out of the woods, that story was being saved.

The horde finally caught up when they got to the bunker. The slow opening door didn't help. But ~~a crescendo later and~~ the door opened enough for them to crawl under, and all that's left was to shoot the zombies trying to do the same until the door slid closed, just as slowly.

It finally did, and Coach leaned against the wall. He panted, hard.

"God DAMN..."

Jean moved over to him and offered an arm. Marshall was already carrying the unconscious Rochelle in both arms of his own arms, seeing as he wasn't sure how good of an idea it was to haul a pregnant woman over his shoulders.

"Gotta agree with that shit." He grunted. "Doc better still be here."

God dammit Nick, say or do something that will actually help her.

Because this awkward, ominous silence is getting to her.

Rochelle didn't know why she had even half-expected an answer from him. Nick wouldn't know. They talked about all this a long time ago. He already SAID he wouldn't be a good father. And Ro didn't think she'd be a great mother, either.

She sighed.

It had to be up to her, huh?

"Let's figure it out when she--" UGH GOD NOT AGAIN MORE PAIN. Rochelle groans, hard. "--when she wants to come out. Which is gonna be soon, shit."

God dammit. She would get up and walk around or something. But moving is a task and a half. And yet she wanted to move.

She could feel the pain getting more frequent too. That was a sign if anything.

Hell, if he knew what to say that would help either of them, he'd have said it. Maybe after they got her through this shit, they could make the decision. Hard to think when they were both stuck on how the kid'd be coming out soon.

And shit-- where the hell was Travis?

He moved back to the bed and reached for her shoulder. He'd seen her attempts to move and fuck, if she thought it'd help--

"Want me to help you up? Move around a little or something?"

Rochelle hesitates. Finally, she nods. For once, she doesn't stiffen when he touches her.

"Yeah, please."

She offers his arm out to him and slides her legs off the bed.

"Okay, easy." He keeps a hand on her arm, helping her carefully off the bed. He doesn't step away either, sticking close just in case she needs the support.

"Feel a little better now?"

"Not really." She grunts as she puts her feet on the floor and starts walking.

"But sort of. Thanks."

She's not really in the mood to anymore for several reasons, but she smiles anyway.

"Not a problem, sweetheart." He stays close, walking around the room while keeping a hand on her back lightly.

He returns the smile, not that he's really feeling it much either.

A few hours passed. It felt longer for Rochelle. But now that she was lying back in the gurney bed, legs spread out with Travis right there in the middle as if he was gonna catch whatever shot out of her crotch--yeah. Ro changed her mind. She could have handled a few more hours. Because pushing? Yeah, no, pushing was the worst part.

"You're doing good, Ro!" Speak of the devil, Jean was at Rochelle's side with her hand on her shoulder.

Jesus christ, this could only be worse if Ellis was here. Rochelle was already sweating hard, panting hard, and yelling hard. She woke up half the bunker already. Coach, god bless him, was outside explaining to everyone that the baby was coming and they needed the privacy. The others didn't need to be told twice, and turned the hallway outside into a waiting room. Ro was glad the blinds were closed now.

But that was the least of her concerns now.

"Okay, another big push--"

"Jesus CHRIST!"

"C'mon, Ro, you're doing good," Nick repeated, holding one of her hands in his while the other rested against her other shoulder. Like hell was he gonna wait outside... even if he wasn't sure this was a freaking show he wanted. He hoped to God Coach was out there keeping Ellis at bay though because seriously? Pretty much everyone was awake now and they did not need the kid bouncing around in here.

Asking dumbass questions.

Jesus Christ, that looked painful though.

"I am NOT doing fucking good!" Rochelle said in between pants, so high pitched it was almost a REALLY RIDICULOUS SQUEAL BUT GODDAMN THIS HURT.

But regardless she braces herself against the wall and, sucking in air and squeezing Nick's hand so hard that she's pretty sure she's cutting off his circulation, gives another long, HARD push.

"Good, good, good, good--okay, I can see the head!"

"SHIT!" Rochelle collapses into her pillow again. It's not time to lie down but HOLY FUCKING SHIT she doesn't think she can do this. Why did she and Nick have sex again? Oh, right, because she was horny and, most of the time, she actually liked the man. Right now, though, this isn't one of those times. Because wants to hit him in the dick.

Goddammit, she's squeezing his hand off. It's actually on the painful side, but he doesn't say anything because shit, what she's going through actually looks way more painful.

And yeah, they were both really fucking horny and he was kinda hoping it wouldn't result with him getting punched in the dick since... she looked like she might actually be thinking about it. Thankfully, she was probably a little too focused on the kid coming out of her.

Jesus Christ, there was a baby coming out. "Ro, c'mon... fuck, c'mon, sweetheart. Almost there."

Yeah, no, she'll have to hit him in the dick later because the baby 1/4th of a way out of her has her attention right now.

"I can't. I..." No, that was a lie. She could. She may have had to wheeze every breath out of her lungs right now, but she KNEW she could.

"Yeah, you can," Nick murmured, even though it seemed like she'd gotten her second wind... or well, not so much a second wind, but at least some determination to finish it up. "Hey, remember, baddest woman alive, huh?"

Rochelle doesn't answer at first. She's trying to catch her breath, even though it won't matter much when she has to push again. But there's no time for her to take long. Finally, her expression changes into something more determined and she nodded. She would have smiled at him, but there was a new resolve in her.

"Right. Baddest woman alive."

Ro renews her grip on Nick's hand.

It only takes a couple more pushes, but for the producer it feels like longer than that. This whole NIGHT has been long. But finally, Travis is standing up with a little mocha figure in his hands. Gasping one more breath, Rochelle lifts her head up.

"Is that...?" Like she had to ask. Yeah. That was her baby. Her daughter. "Is she breathing?"

His hand is never going to be the same again... ever. He just lets her squeeze it though and soon, it's all forgotten anyway when there's this little kid in Travis' hands soon.

Jesus Christ...

"Is she alright?" Shit, let her be alright.

Jean rushes to Travis' side. It's quiet for what feels like what to many seconds to Rochelle. But Travis and Jean are smiling.

Finally--

She cries.

More that relief comes over Rochelle. There's a strange amazement as she lets go of Nick's hand and tries to pull herself up to a sitting position (which is harder than it sounds in her exhaustion). She's crying. The little tiny girl is crying and waving her little hands and kicking her little feet and she came out of her.

Travis turns to Nick with the biggest smile that old face has probably ever seen. That tiny thing in his arms looks a lot like Nick, with what are definitely her mother's eyes hiding behind that pinched face. The doctor shifts her in his arms to grab some scissors from a nearby tray. He holds them out to Nick.

"Congratulations, you're a dad. You wanna do the honors and cut the cord?"

Nick is grinning, wide, when he hears that kid crying... and she's got a hell of a set of lungs on her too. He's taking that to mean something good and goddammit, he's sure he shouldn't be that happy over a kid squalling her eyes out.

But he's relieved.

He hadn't realized how damn worried he'd been about the kid.

"Huh? YEah.... yeah, okay." He almost hesitates at the question, but he's done enough disgusting shit lately that he figures he can handle it. Taking the scissors, he goes to cut it.

"Christ, look at her..." She looked like him... well, him and Ro. It was a pretty indescribable feeling, seeing her.

Their daughter squirms and cries as best she can with her little lungs, which are pretty damn powerful despite their size. Rochelle can't help the half-relieved, half-amazed laugh that comes out of her.

"Let me look. I just pushed her out of me and I can't see her face."

Travis chuckles as he hands the baby over to Jean.

"Hang on, darling. We gotta get her warm..."

Jean takes a blanket nearby and quickly, but gently, wraps her in it. There's a giant smile on her face too as she coos at the child because god almighty. When was the last time a miracle like this happened in a world so full of death, now? At least, to Jean, this little girl was a miracle. When she's properly swaddled, Jean scoops her back up and walks back to Nick. Whether or not Nick was mentally ready for this the first place, she puts her in his hands.

"Here--you got a little girl now."

And somehow, that little girl starts to calm in his arm. Her cries calm into little whimpers. With a wink, Jean nods over to Rochelle.

"She's got a mommy to meet too."

Jesus, he's nowhere near ready to hold the little thing that's shoved in his arms. He's got a feeling she's gonna keep squealing and squirming even as his arms curl carefully around her to hold her close -- got a feeling she's gonna hate him holding her.

To his surprise though, she quiets down and calms. He lets out a surprise huff.

It's a little indescribable still. She's gorgeous and yeah, his. His daughter... and while he hated that thought moments ago, he's a little too surprised to even think of anything besides how cute the kid is.

Jean draws him out of it though and he walks closer to Rochelle to put her in her arms, careful as he can. "Jesus, look at her, Ro."

Rochelle thought she was ready to hold her daughter. Then she wasn't. Wait. No. Okay. Now she is--shit, changed her mind, no thank you. But then Nick is coming to her with that little bundle of a baby in his arms to put it in her own. For a few seconds she's not sure what to do, and Rochelle is awkward as she takes her. She's held babies before, but now that she's holding her own it's like there's never been a little human being against her breast before. But now that there is, she stares.

At first, Rochelle is dead quiet. She finds herself amazed at that tiny face, those tiny features. Jesus, she really did look like Nick. And she was theirs. She was hers.

Their daughter still whimpers, and this time lets out another soft cry. Suddenly, Rochelle snaps into mommy mode.

"Shhh, shh shh shh shh..." Rochelle can't help the gigantic smile that breaks across her face. She laughs quiet, and frees a hand to wipe a tear that was threatening to come out. "Hey, you. We've been waiting for you."

Nick leaned a little closer to Rochelle's side as he watched her with the kid. Jesus, Nick still found it hard to believe they had a healthy baby with all the crap they'd been through since this.

A healthy, non-infected baby.

He let out a sigh of relief as he reached out a hand to carefully touch the baby, his finger brushing against her cheek. "Put us through a lotta hell too."

Rochelle laughed.

"Yeah. Yeah, you did." And Rochelle didn't believe it either. After all the shit they went through, their baby was still here and screaming like any normal baby should be. "You take after your daddy in the trouble-making department."

She paused for a moment. Then she looked at Nick.

"I still like 'Selena'."

"Hey, since when do I cause trouble?" The protest was half-hearted at best though no heat behind it. It was hard to care when they had the kid right there, normal and healthy.

Shit, that had to mean they did something right, huh?

"I like it," he answered and gave her a look, a grin tugging at his lips. Whatever arguments they'd had awhile ago were kind of forgotten... Funny, considering they were arguing about the kid holding their attention right now. "I think it's a great name, sweetheart."

"You cause plenty of trouble," Said affectionately with no heat behind her own words, either. Eyes still locked on their daughter, Rochelle leans on Nick's shoulder. If Ro could make a list of things Nick did, the baby would be right on top. Like it mattered, though. As far as she was concerned, she didn't mind this kind of trouble at all.

Not anymore, anyway.

"How about that, huh?" Rochelle brushed at their baby's temple affectionately with her index finger and leaned forward to kiss her forehead. "Selena? It's got a good ring to it. What do you think?"

Travis grinned and Jean laughed. The doctor patted her shoulder, and motioned for the door.

"We'll leave you two alone. Everyone outside's going to want to know what happened. Especially your friends."

Rochelle looked up. Then she looked at Nick. With a tired grin, she shook her head.

"Jesus, we got an audience already."

Nick eased an arm around her carefully when she leaned in and reached out to touch the baby-- Selena again, fingers brushing lightly down the side of her face. He smiled despite himself.

Whatever worries he had were kind of forgotten now, brushed aside.

He let out a laugh of his own and nodded. "Just wait, sweetheart... Once Overalls is up? We're not gonna get a break."

Oh, goddammit... Ellis would be in here soon, getting redneck germs all over his baby.

"How do you know he's not already up?"

... Because they would have heard him on the other side of the wall by now. Nevermind, Rochelle knows he may have slept through this.

"... Actually, I think I just answered my own question."

Travis chuckled and shook his head. He ushered Jean and himself outside, and the door closed behind them. For a second, Ro caught a peak of the others outside. A group of their fellow bunker-mates were clustered on a bench together, looking eager. And when the door was closed behind him, she could barely hear Travis' muffled voice likely announcing that they had a happy, healthy baby girl in their group now.

Much less muffled were the cheers that follow. Rochelle could distinctly make out a whoop from Coach, and she started laughing. With that, she looked back to Nick.

"So. Baby."
