Alternate title: Three Men and a Baby

Holy hell of a morning.

After Coach had gotten shot, the motherfucking mountain man, the one the other called Marshall, didn't waste time. The other woman quickly introduced herself as Jean, a nurse and Marshall's wife, and had barely started trying to stop Coach's bleeding when Marshall brought up the bunker. It was less of a reccomendation and more like a demand. With Coach bleeding as bad as he was coupled with Rochelle's condition, which he would bring up later, the faster they got out the better.

And it was just in time, because as soon as the four of them got out of the hospital and made their quick introductions. Well, introductions coupled with arguing, especially when it was brought up who had shot Coach. Jean was about to shut them up with the roar of a horde did it for her. It didn't take more than a second for them to decide what to do. They abandoned the van (temporarily, they hoped), carried Coach and Rochelle into Marshall and Jean's pickup truck, piled in, and drove the fuck out.

Coach managed to stay conscious, even with all the blood he was losing. Rochelle, though, was out hot (pun intended) in her feverish condition. Jean did her best with the both of them. She said there was a doctor at the bunker, a co-worker she escaped with before she found Marshall again, who could give them a lot better help. Otherwise, between driving and trying to stablize the others, Jean and Marshall didn't have much focus to explain themselves and the bunker. As soon as they were out of the woods, that story was being saved.

The horde finally caught up when they got to the bunker. The slow opening door didn't help. But a crescendo later and the door opened enough for them to crawl under, and all that's left was to shoot the zombies trying to do the same until the door slid closed, just as slowly.

It finally did, and Coach leaned against the wall. He panted, hard.

"God DAMN..."

Jean moved over to him and offered an arm. Marshall was already carrying the unconscious Rochelle in both arms of his own arms, seeing as he wasn't sure how good of an idea it was to haul a pregnant woman over his shoulders.

"Gotta agree with that shit." He grunted. "Doc better still be here."

"Just wait." Travis straightened up. He took Rochelle's legs off the stirrups and covered her properly with the sheet and some extra time.

Rochelle just groaned.

Meanwhile Coach is standing there.

Nick could wait... well, he didn't have a choice and nothing short of a Charger rushing at his ass could get him to move right now. He gave a look at Coach, who was still just standing there.

"You gonna come in or just gawk, big guy?"

The woman in question tried to get as comfortable as she could. It was easier said that done. The pressure on her pelvis wasn't doing her favors. She could tell already, this little girl wanted out soon. And while that meant she would be pushing it out of her sooner than she wanted to, it didn't mean she'd have to wait six hours either.

She tries to take a deep breath.

"Now what?"

The question's rhetorical. So she has the baby then... what? Then what the hell were they supposed to do with a child they officially didn't even want. Shit. Rochelle felt stupid for putting this off.

Coach frowned and shakes his head.

"Just lemme know what I could do to help."

"We get you through this," Nick said, even if he was thinking along the same lines. They were going to have a baby they hadn't planned for in a goddamn bunker with zombies just outside.

What the hell had they done?

What were they going to do with her?

He shook his head and tried to shrug off the thoughts. Had more pressing things to worry about and he had no idea how the hell to answer Coach. "You, uh... ever had experience with this kinda thing, Coach?"

He'd never asked Coach if he'd had a family before the whole apocalypse crap happened, but if he had more experience than just his gig teaching health? That'd be a load off.

"Then what?"

Like Nick would know. Rochelle lolled her head back. "Shit... I should've figured this out a long time ago."

It's not like it hadn't been on her mind.

It didn't SEEM like Coach was bothering Rochelle anymore, so he quietly stepped towards Nick. Nick was the only one he ever mentioned having a family to, so he nods.

"Much as my wife would let me."

"I don't know, Rochelle. Let's cross that bridge when we get to it, huh?" Not that Nick wasn't worried about it right now either, but dammit, what could they do?

Who the hell could they really give her too? And could they really stand to keep her and raise her? Hell if he knew.

"So you got an idea of what to do here?"

"Nick, we're THERE."

Rochelle frowned. God dammit, this is what happened before. They either dodged the question or they started fighting.

Coach frowned to Rochelle.

"We just gotta wait."

"Then I don't know, Rochelle. I guess we got a baby to try and get through a goddamn apocalypse alive," He answered, his tone edging on exasperated and irritated. He didn't want to argue with a pregnant woman, he really didn't... but he didn't have any answers and this topic... never ended well.

"But first, we gotta worry about you getting through this okay... you and the kid both."

"God dammit, Nick. We've been doing this--"

"Hey, hey, hey, hey." Coach finally intervened. "Look, I know it's a little late for this, Ro. But, and I know I'm the last person to say this, but Nick's got a point." He put a hand on her arm. "Right now, we gotta get you through this. This ain't exactly in a hospital."

"Closest thing we're gonna get around here." Travis was only half-listening as he wandered through the room's cupboards and checking the equipment they kept in the corner.

She went quiet, glancing back at Coach. Shit. Well, if anything, she knew Coach was right. So she groaned and rolled to her side, facing away from Nick and Coach.

She closed her eyes. Quiet. Thinking. Did she even want a baby? At first, that was easy to answer. No way. But now, she wasn't sure. Could she even take care of one, especially here?

She knew Jean had been wanting a baby...

Nick was glad for the back up from Coach honestly. They could only worry about so many things at once and Nick would prefer to worry about this right now, all things considered. A hell of a lot could go wrong and he was getting worried and agitated.

Though she seemed well enough right now... as much as could be expected anyway.

He let out a sigh when she turned away from him and kept his mouth shut for now. Didn't want to stress her out anymore. "Alright, Doc, you need us to do anything? I mean... you've done stuff like this before, right?"

"I would've told you five months ago if I didn't." Travis straightened out. "The only thing we can't get anymore if an epidural."

Muffled Rochelle groaning in the distance through her pillow.

"... Yeah, nevermind."

Yeah, okay, so she'd have to tough this out... but considering they toughed out a zombie apocalypse? He was hoping that she'd be able to do this.

Still would've been a hell of a lot better if there was an epidural though.

For now, Nick just stayed at her bedside though, reaching one hand over to rub at her shoulder. Hell if he knew how to comfort her.

Rochelle shrugged his touch off. It was a bad time to be pissed at your baby daddy, but she had too damn much on her mind. She's quiet again. But finally, suddenly--

"If we don't want the baby..." Another pause. She sighed. "Jean and Marshall could have her."

Travis immediately stopped what he was doing and looked at Ro, clear suprise on his face. Coach did the same with an exression something more somber, but understanding.

Rochelle just stared hard at the wall. She didn't know, either. She didn't know.

Nick let his hand drop. Well, if she was still pissed, like hell was he going to push it. This wasn't the time to argue with the pregnant chick, he was pretty sure.

The question though, the suggestion got him to pretty much pause and stare for a few moments. What the hell was he supposed to say to that?

He didn't know either.

He gave a look to Coach briefly, like the big guy could tell him what the hell to say here. Of course he couldn't though, wasn't exactly his decision to make.

Problem was? Nick was pretty damn sure he didn't want to be part of the decision either. "Is that what you want?"

Seemed like a fair enough question to ask.

"Yeah." The detached, faint way she spoke betrayed her answer. Yeah, this baby was imminent. She could have sworn she could feel her move around inside her. Her hand went over her belly. It was almost time, and she STILL didn't know what the hell to do.

"What about you?"

"You don't sound all that sure," Nick mumbled. Maybe he was dodging the question... he probably was, really, but she really didn't sound all that sure.

Hell, neither was he.

"You didn't answer the question."

"Yeah, okay. Sounds like a plan." Nick just wasn't sure why he felt so... agitated by it. Disappointed in some damn way he wasn't going to dwell on. He wasn't father material, never wanted to be.

It was probably better for the kid, really. He just didn't know why the hell he felt so weird about it all of a sudden.

Rochelle pauses again. Then she nods, slowly. Honestly, she was thinking the same thing. Like said before, she was too damned torn. She didn't want a baby, she didn't think of herself as anywhere near being a mother. Especially in an apocalypse. But...

Another wave of pain hits her and breaks her thoughts. Rochelle pushed out a slight gasp and clung to herself.

Travis, who had been quiet and watching, frowned.

"I'll be right back. I better get some things out of storage..."

He walked out. Coach was slowly taking the hint, too.

"You guys wanna be alone? Ain't much we can do yet."

Nick tentatively reached out to put a hand to her back, rubbing lightly. What else could he do? She was in pain though and he felt like he ought to try to do something.

"Huh?" He gave a look back to Coach and shrugged. "You can go if you want to... like you said, we're gonna be doing a hell of a lot of waiting for awhile."

No sense in them all standing around yet, besides this wasn't exactly the kind of conversation you had in a room full of people, he figured.

Coach nodded.

"I'm gonna--help out Travis. Better not wake up Ellis in the process." Coach huffed and shook his head. "Not yet, anyway. That boy's gonna be all over this."

With a brief, concerned look at Rochelle, Coach headed out, trailing behind Travis. Shit. Babies were supposed to be a happy thing. Even if those two wanted that little baby girl, it ain't like this was the happiest time to have one in the first damn place...

Rochelle was thinking the same thing. She doesn't react to Nick's hand, but she does cling tighter to herself. That counts for something, right?

So congrats, Nick, you're stuck with your pregnant baby mamma who's in some major pain.

"Jesus, yeah, let the kid sleep." He did not need Ellis bouncing around this goddamn room right now. He felt a headache coming on bad enough as it was.

He rubbed his hand over when she curled further into herself and let out a sigh. When they're gone, he let out a short sigh. "You need anything?"

He knows he keeps asking that, but... hell, it's not like they're prepared. Hard to prepare for childbirth when you've spent most of it running for your lives from shit that wants to kill you.

Another silence.

"I don't know."

"Yeah, okay." He was quiet for now, keeping his hand moving over her back since she hadn't moved away or told him to stop yet.

"Just let me know if you do."

The (ex, assistant) producer let out a deep, DEEP sigh. She still hadn't turned back to face him, nor did she react much to his hand. She would have appreciated it more if the impending baby thing wasn't so heavy in her mind.

It's not like she hadn't had nine fucking months to think about it.

"That's the thing, Nick. I don't know."
